About us
Underground Africa is a Techno collective from Johannesburg. We put on club nights, warehouse raves and day raves, release music on KOVA Records and host the UA podcast.
The collective
Underground Africa was founded in Johannesburg in April 2020 to give South African artists a serious platform to release their music.
It started as a group of young friends who wanted to get their music out. In 2021 we took the next step and hosted our first two events, and from 2022 we were putting on nights regularly.
Since then we've booked international artists to join us across our events, from club nights and warehouse raves to day raves and other one-off nights.
We are based in Johannesburg, a city with a long underground electronic history, and most of our nights happen here. We have also hosted a few events in Cape Town, and our DJs often play there and in Durban.
The sound
We play hypnotic, deep and raw Techno. Some nights are darker and faster, others are deeper and slower.
We book artists for their sound. An international headliner, a South African DJ and a newer local name can all play the same night.
Our events
Each of our events has its own place and its own feel.
KOVA Records
KOVA Records is our record label, launched in Johannesburg in 2024. It releases stern, hypnotic Techno from South African and international artists. So far that includes EPs from BENZA, James Harbrecht, Modēm, Daryn Steytler, Joss and ROAX, and our first various artists release, KOVA-VA01.
Podcast
The UA Podcast is our invite-only mix series on SoundCloud. Each mix is a South African or international artist's own interpretation of the hypnotic Underground Africa sound.
The idea
